HOUSTON (February 8, 2007) - On Wednesday, February 7, 2007, Susman Godfrey L.L.P. filed a lawsuit in state district court in Galveston, Texas on behalf of Texas plaintiffs' attorney Anthony Buzbee. Buzbee is suing Dredging Contractors of America and Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company for their illegal taping and dissemination of Buzbee's remarks at a private seminar in May 2006. Buzbee's lead trial attorney is Susman Godfrey's managing partner Stephen D. Susman.
Buzbee has a successful practice representing injured employees of dredging companies that operate in South Texas. He was invited in May 2006 to give some remarks on the "plaintiff's perspective" at an invitation-only Marine and Energy Seminar in Nevada. Buzbee agreed to participate in the seminar after event organizers assured him that his remarks would not be taped or recorded.
According to the Petition, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, one of Buzbee's frequent litigation adversaries, sent an executive to the seminar in order to secretly record Buzbee with a hidden taping device. This taping was illegal under state and federal law. Great Lakes then, according to the Petition, conspired with the Dredging Contractors of America to disseminate Buzbee's presentation throughout the State of Texas as part of an effort to damage Buzbee's reputation and career.
Stephen D. Susman, attorney for Anthony Buzbee, commented: "Mr. Buzbee was assured that he would not be taped. The defendants have taken advantage of Mr. Buzbee's honesty and good will. Their sneaky behavior should not be tolerated."
