The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a rule stating contractors performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, or schools built before 1978 must be certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. The rule applies not only to contracting professionals associated with these structures, but also professionals involved in the resale of these structures as well. This discussion will summarize the EPA’s new rule and the speakers will provide guidance regarding the certification process and how to protect oneself against the potential liabilities associated with residential sites that may be contaminated.

“Contractors, maintenance personnel, realtors, and other parties involved with the renovation and resale of residential properties should be involved in this discussion. Topics will include risks and liabilities, field work examples from a lead-safe certified contractor, advice on how to communicate with clients, and the certification procedures involved with becoming lead-safe certified,” explained Lushis.
