Judith Gilliam Recognized by U.S. Army for Outstanding Civilian Service

- Judith Gilliam of Baker & Daniels LLP was honored by the United States Army with a Commander's Award for Civilian Service in recognition of her consistently high quality legal skills and exceptional dedication and service as a paralegal to wounded warriors.

For the past two years, Gilliam served in Germany as a paralegal in the Office of Soldiers Counsel — Medical Evaluation Board/Physical Evaluation Board in Europe, assisting wounded and disabled soldiers in completing disability evaluation for retention or retirement. She reviewed medical records, researched medical conditions, prepared legal documents, and assisted other paralegals and military attorneys located throughout Europe with case preparation.

A legal secretary with Baker & Daniels from 2006 to 2008, Gilliam began working as a paralegal in Germany when her husband, Jason Gilliam, was stationed there as a soldier. She continued serving as a paralegal there and caring for the couple's children when her husband was deployed to combat in Afghanistan. Gilliam rejoined Baker & Daniels in October 2011 after returning from Europe.

The Commander's Award for Civilian Service is given to Army employees who establish a pattern of excellence in their service by setting an example of achievement, demonstrating initiative or skill that results in considerable savings or improved workforce health or safety, leading an effort for improved productivity of the unit, developing favorable local publicity through services rendered, or demonstrating courage or competency in a government-related emergency. The military equivalent of this award is the Army Commendation Medal.

The award was presented to Gilliam during a ceremony at the Baker & Daniels downtown office on Nov. 11, 2011, during Veterans Day. Brigadier General Nadya West, commanding general of the European Regional Medical Command, ordered this recognition for Gilliam. Colonel Eric Waldkoetter, national coordinating counsel for the U.S. Army’s Office of Soldiers Counsel; Major Jeff Mastin, officer in charge of the Office of Soldiers Counsel — Europe; and Master Sergeant Rodger McConnaughey, chief paralegal in the Office of Soldiers Counsel, presented the award.
