April Lucas Elected President of International Trade Group

COLUMBIA, S.C. (January 13, 2012) - Nexsen Pruet attorney April Lucas has been unanimously elected as the President of the Midlands International Trade Association (MITA). Lucas is co-chair of the firm’s Economic Development Group and her term began on January 1st.

MITA is one of the oldest trade networking groups in the Southeast. Founded more than 35 years ago, its mission is to provide a forum for its members to gain knowledge and make contacts to build and develop their international business.

It’s about protecting the collective interests of the communities in which they operate,” said John Sowards, Nexsen Pruet’s Board Chairman. “Promoting international trade is an important part of our state’s economic success, and I’m proud to see April take on such a critical role.”

For more than 20 years, Lucas has assisted private businesses and government entities with capital projects, including those involving complex financing as well as state and local incentive agreements. She handled the legal work for America’s first asset securitization transaction that involved community development block grant loans. She also worked on one of the first privately enhanced pooled industrial development bond programs and closed the first Recovery Zone Facility Bond transaction in South Carolina.

Lucas is co-chair of the firm’s Women’s Leadership Initiative. She earned her undergraduate degree in International Studies from the University of South Carolina and her law degree from George Washington University in Washington D.C.
